• Root canal treatment is a technique used to treat the tooth when the nerve of the tooth has been irreversibly damaged as a result of tooth decay or an accident. The procedure allows the dentist to remove the damaged nerve tissue and restore the root of the tooth with a biocompatible material usually gutta percha. Multiple x-rays are usually taken during the procedure to verify proper length and fill of the root. Root canal treatment allows the dentist to save a tooth from extraction if the tooth is strong enough to support a filling and crown. In most cases root canal treated teeth should be restored with a crown to prevent future fracture.
