Examination

Complete Exam

On your first visit to Yonge & Merton Dental a complete exam of the hard and soft tissues of the mouth is performed. A full set of x-rays is recommended to be taken during your first visit to help diagnose all areas of your teeth and bone that can’t be seen by the eyes alone. This includes looking for any signs of cavities between the teeth, infection and condition of the bony support around the teeth. A full set of x-rays is done once every 5 years. If you have come from another office where x-rays were taken recently, we will try to determine if your records are up to date and recommend any additional images needed.

Recall Exam

They are performed every 6-12 months during your hygiene visits depending on the individual. During recalls exams, we review your intraoral hard and soft tissues. We may also recommend updating a small number of check-up x-rays every 1-2 years to determine if there are any cavities between your back teeth, and if past restorative work (eg. fillings, crowns) is in good condition.

Periodontal Exam

They are ideally done once a year also during your hygiene visits to check the health of the gums and bone around your teeth. This includes measuring gum pockets, and gum recession, recording areas that bleed more easily, and any mobility of teeth. Periodontal exams will allow us to give recommendations on how and where to improve your daily hygiene habits at home.
